With his headphones plugged in, Reita was strumming away on his bass, completely lost in his own little world. He was isolated by the headphones certainly, and physically separated from the world as well, hiding out in the empty studio.
Well, not completely empty. As Reita kicked his swivel chair around at the climax of the song he was playing, his eyes happened to catch sight of the unnaturally bright, currently pink, hair of Kitty. She was curled up in a chair right by the door witching him with her head resting sideways on her knees. Her expression looked distinctly sad to Reita, but he was unable to dwell on the offhand observation as embarrassment crawled hotly up his cheeks. Pulling off his headphones quickly, he said as greeting, “Hey.” “Hey,” Kitty returned softly. “When did you get here?” She shrugged. “A while ago.” “Oh.” Kitty was most certainly not her usual chipper self and that fact combined with Reita’s embarrassment led to an awkward silence of sorts. It was awkward for Reita, at least. Kitty didn’t actually notice it as thoughts swirled around in her head. After a moment she asked, “What song were you playing?” “Headache Man.” “I thought so,” she said, nodding in response. A small smile was hidden by her arms as she adjusted her head on her knees. “I liked watching you play,” she mumbled. “Why?” Reita asked, puzzled and shamed into trying to deflect attention away from the current situation of her having been watching him without his notice and failing miserably to do so. “You can barely see that I’m doing anything. At least when I watch you dance I can see you move. My messing around with my bass can’t be half as interesting.” “You watch me dance?” Kitty’s voice was surprised, shy. Reita realized his mistake immediately. “Not regularly. I’ve just happened by the practice room once or twice while you were in there,” he covered, trying to hide his embarrassment further. He’d only made things harder for himself. Watching as Reita squirmed in his seat, Kitty tucked herself tighter into the ball she was sitting in. “You can, you know. I don’t mind. But you have to let me watch you.” Still touchy about having been snuck up on, Reita grumbled, “Why do you even want to watch?” “It’s interesting,” Kitty replied. “The passion you put into your music is amazing. Even when I can’t hear a bit of it, I can still tell what you’re trying to say with it.” “But isn’t it boring? You only have little things to watch,” Reita commented gruffly. “I like it.” “I still think that watching you is more exciting.” Kitty’s somber expression returned slowly as the silence stretched away from Reita’s grumble. She put her cheek back on her knees and looked away from Reita for the first time since he’d noticed her presence. By now, Reita had calmed down enough for her apparent unhappiness to register as a concern. Ever the sharp and subtle mastermind, Reita asked, “What’s wrong?” “Nothing.” Reita just stared down her pout without dignifying her answer with a response. “You could at least pretend to believe me,” Kitty accused. “Tell me what happened.” “Nothing. Nothing happened. Honest,” Kitty informed him. “Then what’s wrong?” “They hate me.” Reita felt his anger flare unreasonably, as it always did when he perceived any sort of threat to Kitty. “Who hates you?” “Everyone who’s not in Gaze,” Kitty muttered blackly. “Did you know that I have three anti-fan café forums? On one sharing platform? I think it might be a record.” “They’re just jealous.” “They still hate me.” “But they’re stupid. Why does it matter whether or not they hate you?” Kitty used one of her feet to kick at Reita’s knee. The act, rather than impacting Reita in any notable manner, served to send Kitty spinning on her chair’s swivel. “You’ve never been a girl in her twenties. Your opinion doesn’t count.” “Why not?” Reita demanded softly. He got up and twisted his bass around on its shoulder strap to hang out of the way on his back as he came over to come over to face Kitty. This soft thing wasn’t really his style, but he’d seen Ruki console Maki once or twice and he knew what he probably ought to say. “I’ve never been a girl in her twenties, but I love one. She’s over sensitive, and doesn’t know the way she should act in the face of idiots, but she’s got a few really good friends to make her feel better.” Reita wrapped his arms around Kitty’s shoulders, completely enveloping her, and tucked his face up against her neck. She turned her head as far as it would go, eyeing the bassist carefully, critically. And then she kissed him, a quick peck on the cheek she could reach from her position. It was a sudden and unabashed action that caught Reita by surprise. It was over before he could react and Kitty was pulling out of his arms. She kept a hold on one of his hands, and she gave it a gentle tug as she smiled sweetly, asking, “Nee, Akira, will you buy me some ice cream?” Honestly, how anyone could have been expected to resist that face was beyond Reita’s comprehension. He gave in without any feigned delay; it was reward enough to see her smiling again. Slipping his bass off and setting it down carefully, he said, “Let’s go.” Kitty squealed and adjusted her grip so that she was clinging to his arm as the pair made their way out into Tokyo’s mid-spring afternoon. ♡♥Finite♥♡ |
